Colchester is one of the better-connected commuter towns on the Great Eastern Main Line, and the reason people move here from further down the A12 is on the departure board: several fast trains an hour into London Liverpool Street, with the quickest taking under fifty minutes. This page sets out what the journey actually takes, what it costs, and the one detail that catches out new arrivals, which is that Colchester has two stations and only one of them is quick.

How long the journey takes

The fastest booked journey from Colchester to London Liverpool Street is 47 minutes. That is an off-peak timing: the 12:00 and the 12:30 both arrive 47 minutes later, on a Monday timetable checked against National Rail data.

So the honest planning number for a commuter is 53 to 55 minutes at peak, not 47. The slower services on the same route, the ones that call at Marks Tey, Kelvedon, Witham and the rest, run 60 to 75 minutes, and they are mixed in with the fast ones. Check the individual train rather than assuming.

Frequency in the morning peak is roughly five trains an hour, which is why the Colchester commute holds up even when one is cancelled. All of these are Greater Anglia services; Greater Anglia also manages the station.

Colchester or Colchester Town: pick the right one

Colchester has two stations and they are not interchangeable.

Colchester (still widely called North Station, postcode CO1 1XD) is the main line station and the one every fast London train uses. It has 935 parking spaces, step-free access to the platforms, and a ticket office open 05:00 to 22:00 Monday to Friday, 05:30 to 21:00 on Saturday and 06:00 to 21:00 on Sunday.

Colchester Town sits on the branch towards Clacton and is far closer to the city centre, which makes it tempting. It is also much slower to London. Most journeys from Colchester Town involve a change at Colchester and run 1 hour 3 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. There are a handful of direct trains, such as the 06:41 which reaches Liverpool Street at 08:02 in 1 hour 21 minutes, but they are no faster than changing.

The saving grace is the ticketing. Season tickets are sold from “Colchester or Colchester Town” as a single origin, so one season covers both stations. If you live near the town centre you can walk to Colchester Town on a bad weather day without buying anything extra, and still use the fast trains from North Station the rest of the week.

The choice between those two is simply whether you need the Tube, bus and Overground at the London end. If your office is a walk from Liverpool Street, the £6,700 ticket is the one. If you cross London every day, the £8,176 Travelcard version works out cheaper than buying Tube fares separately.

The gap between the £70.30 peak return and the £37.50 super off-peak return is worth planning around. Travelling after the morning peak roughly halves the cost of a day in London. Advance singles on specific trains were selling from £19.50 to £29.00 on the days checked, so a booked-ahead day return can come in under £45 if your times are fixed.

Set against those numbers, an annual season at £6,700 pays for itself at about 95 return journeys, which is roughly two days a week in the office for a full year. Below that, walk-up and advance tickets usually win.
